Who We Are
The Kentucky Approving Agency is a connection between our students and the Department of Veteran Affairs. We want our students to know about and have access to well-managed educationally sound programs that they can trust to help them succeed in meeting their goals.
Our office is responsible for reviewing, approving and monitoring all educational programs and schools within the state of Kentucky. We also provide training and technical help to all schools in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Our Agency monitors the quality of the programs and our veteran's progress within those programs. We grew out of the GI BillĀ® of Rights, and the Administration of Education Benefits, which approved the founding of State Approving Agencies. Under federal law, we are responsible for determining what programs may be approved for the use of VA education benefits for those under Chapter 30, 32, 33 and 35, Title 38, U.S. Code and Chapters 1606, Title 10, U.S. Code.
These responsibilities include:
- Public, proprietary profit and proprietary non-profit institutions of higher learning with academic and professional degree and certificate programs;
- Apprenticeship (APP) programs - formal training leading to journeyman status;
- On-the-job training (OJT) programs - supervised job instruction programs;
- Flight schools programs for vocational flight training; and Exams state board and national certification exams.
